| Carrigaline Utd 3:3 Moone Celtic A (AET) Moone won 2:4 on penalties |
This historic result puts the small townsland of Moone in the record books as one of the first ever KDUL teams to reach the last four of the All Ireland Cup. Moone made the long but exciting trip to Carrigaline in Cork for this quarter final encounter. Carrigaline's home advantage & greater experience on their own astroturf surface meant that this tie was going to be anything but easy. Despite this the Moone management team of Niall Kerins, Christy Doran & Gerry Jackson had their talented Moone side prepared expertly for all eventualities. The game was closely fought from the outset however Moone made the initial breakthrough on 21 mins. Daniel Kelly won a strong midfield tackle and played to Luke Kerins who in turn played a sublime through ball to Josh Miller to pass the ball to the net for the opener. With defensive players Mark McGinley, Conor O'Sullivan, David Lambe & Mark Glynn dealing comfortably with all that Carrigaline threw at them Moone held on to this single goal lead at half time. The second half was a perplexing affair from a Moone point of view as they were relatively on top with their own keeper Mark Jackson not being called upon yet didn't produce any clear cut chances themselves. Furthermore despite this limited pressure on their own goal not only did Moone concede one goal on 55mins but another to their horror with less than 5 mins to play. Even the most hardened Moone supporters strongly feared the worst with such little time remaining however this was almost only the start of the unfolding drama. With a minute of injury time to play Dylan Kennedy was heroic in picking the ball up in his own half and driving at the Carrigaline defence. Kennedy then whipped a dangerous cross into the penalty area which Mark Lawler attacked with a flying volley to rocket unstoppably to the net. This was a sensational end to normal time. Into extra time the introduction of Evan Stephenson and Kieran Farrell paid dividends for Moone. On 73mins Stephenson dribbled dangerously down the right before crossing perfectly to the feet of Farrell who controlled neatly and held off the defenders before shooting to give Moone a 3:2 lead. The drama didn't end there as although Moone appeared to be very professionally playing down the clock, with only 90 seconds remaining the Carrigaline star striker fired a looping volley to the Moone net after a rare foray into their half. This equaliser brought the game to penalties which only moments earlier appeared unlikely. Dylan Kennedy, Kieran Farrell & Josh Miller scored their penalties for Moone while the 'dancing' Mark Jackson in the Moone goal definitely put off two of the Carrigaline takers as they missed the target. This meant that Mark Liederiths cool penalty finish was enough to secure victory for Moone. The joyous scenes that followed made this trip to Cork an unforgettable day for all connected to the Moone area, club, players & families.
